Abigail "Abby" Hughes is a character from the Brat Universe who was featured on A Girl Named Jo.
Abby was born into an Afro-American family in the late 1940s and she was raised in Millwood. She and her family were often treated unfairly by the upper class. Even after civil rights were reached it was still pretty much an unfair world, even if they got to do some things white people could do. Abby protested a lot for changes. Eventually, she, her brother Dwight and some of their friends came to Attaway High to study there. They struggled to make new friends due to the 1960s being still an uncivilised world. However, she befriended Jo Chambers, a poor white girl who was accepting and not a racist. She also was quite close to her new principal Debbie Collins until she realized Debbie didn’t care about her. During the Summer Abby and Jo Chambers went to New York City to stay with her aunt Loretta, where she got a job at a hot dog stand in the World's Fair. There she became friends with Harold, while Jo got a job indoors and was hired by a guy named Felix. Abby and Harold protested with Jo and Felix and others and eventually got civil rights perfectly after the Summer. Then, Abby, Harold and Loretta got indoor jobs at the fair just like they wanted.
