"Arty" is the first episode of the series Attaway Appeal. It aired on September 28, 2017.
Synopsis[]
Cub reporter Tim Sharp joins the student paper, and uncovers a juicy scoop.
Plot[]
It’s the first day of school at Attaway High. Tim Sharp arrives in his first club meeting for the Attaway Appeal where he meets a group of people, Simon, Billy, Sam, Holly and Matilda who is running the meeting.
Everyone starts bringing up rumours and possibly news that are going around the school, then Tim raises his hand, Matilda tells him to put it down and say something, he claims his older brother is friends with the school mascot and discovered that the costume went missing over the weekend. She flatters him for his taste in mystery but shows no interest in the news saying it’s not juicy enough. She tells everyone that they need to come up with real important news if they want to stay on print or Principal Mathers will reduce their budget and make the appeal web only.
They group starts writing down news and commentary from all over Attaway High in hopes they can save Attaway Appeal. Then Matilda ends the meeting and tells everyone to go out and ask people questions to get news and commentary about anything at the school.
Matilda is walking through the hall when she sees Henry Barnett walking in the opposite direction, she tries to get his attention, but Billy gets his attention first, flattering him, trying to make him feel more comfortable, but Henry doesn’t buy his act. Matilda asks Henry how he feels about the upcoming school football game for his team, he tells them he doesn’t feel good about it claiming his team lost two games the year before and believes it’s because they didn’t have a mascot because of superstition, and says that “Arty the Armadillo” gets him fired up. Matilda tells him they will find “Arty” and make it their cover story, but Henry tells them they shouldn’t worry about it and have more important things to cover up and leaves the scene. Tim had been watching the whole time and decided to investigate the Arty incident further through Henry.
Henry is at his locker getting his stuff, when he is approached by Tim Sharp who offers to ask a couple of questions. He mentions to him that the bridges defences are fierce this year, Henry says it’s nothing he can’t handle and tells Tim not to bother him.
Matilda approaches Principal Mathers asking him if he got the emails she sent about the deluxe back-to-school edition wandering if they can have a budget for the appeal. Principal Mathers says that there will be no budget, and tells her that students have to show a lot of enthusiasm for the appeal as they do for the game against Ridge, then will they have a budget and print newspapers.
Tim arrives at the library to do some further investigation on Henry. He grabs some yearbooks to do investigation on Henry. He looks through the year books and finds a picture of Henry, and an individual named Jack Mahoney from Ridge who looks very similar to him. Then goes online on his laptop to check Henry's instagram profile, he sees that his mother’s name is Marianne Mahoney-Barnett, and finds out that Henry and Jack may be related.
Tim approaches Matilda telling her he knows where the “Arty” costume might be she follows him and they both approach Henry in the parking lot. Matilda tells Henry they had no luck in finding “Arty the Armadillo” then she flirts with him saying that he is their only hope of winning the upcoming game, she tries to brush his arm, he quickly pulls away and tells her it’s not a big deal and will still win the playoffs.
Tim stops him, and ask him to riddle if he was his Instagram login and forgot his password, Henry agrees and let him ask questions. Tim asks him what his mother’s maiden name is, he tells him it’s Mahoney, Tim tells him it’s the same name as Jack Mahoney, the star defence tackle for Ridge, then he reminds him that if Attaway loses the game, they will still go to the playoffs as what Henry claimed before, but if Ridge loses, they are out. So he asks him if he’s been pretending to have bad luck in his previous games in order to have his team lose and let Ridge win the Friday game as a personal favour for his first cousin Jack. Then Tim quickly grabs the car keys from Henry's pocket and opens his trunk to find the “Arty the Armadillo” costume in there, revealing that Henry stole it in order to make his team lose.
Matilda compliments Tim on his success in his investigation and asks how he knew Arty was in the trunk. He says he snooped a little bit and depended on luck without having a plan, she is then impressed with his attitude which is perfect for the appeal.
