"Come Together" is the first episode in the first season of A Girl Named Jo, and the first episode overall. It aired on July 3, 2018.

Synopsis[]

Two girls from opposite sides of the tracks begin to unravel a dark chapter in Attaway's past.

Plot[]

In the year 1963, Cathy Fitzroy is waking up and getting ready for school when she sees her boyfriend Lawrence and friend Alice waiting for her parked outside her house. She walks down the stairs wearing a pink business skirt and jacket with a white neckless, but then her mother Virginia Fitzroy stops her and questions her if she is wearing that to school. Cathy walks back upstairs, her brother Ray Fitzroy walks behind her holding a Willie Mays baseball and Virginia tells him that he cannot bring it to school. Cathy comes back downstairs in a pink top and a gray skirt, walks out the door and meets Lawrence and Alice outside, gets in the car and they drive off to school.

Meanwhile Jo Chambers walks up slipping her shoes on and rushes downstairs trying to find her "To Kill A Mockingbird" book. She meets her dad Thomas in the kitchen seeing her holding the book in his hand. Jo takes the book and asks where her brother Junior is, and Thomas responds by saying he is working at the Diner and opened the shop early to do a morning shift before school.

Jo arrives at school and reading a book while walking in, she runs into Lawrence who slams her book on the ground and Alice who steps on it in the mud splashing Jo. Cathy told them it wasn't nice but they didn't care. Jo walks to class and runs into the principal who calls her into his office, he is frustrated that she's covered in mud because he says he wants this year to be better for her, he notices that she is signed up for shop class and believes that someone mixed up her schedule. Jo claims that it was no mistake and that she wanted to take Autoshop class, she refuses to take the Home Economics class because its a violation of her fundamental rights.

Meanwhile in class, Lawrence asks Cathy out on a date but she refuses and says she's busy, then Jo arrives to class and is laughed at by what she's wearing. In the cafeteria, Junior is seen sitting alone at a table and Lawrence tries to throw an empty little milk carton at him but missed, Junior takes the empty carton and throws it into the garbage can beside Lawrence. Alice comes over and asks Junior if he's trying out for this years basketball team, Junior says that he can't due to having to work at the diner after school. She asks if he would like to see a movie with her at the Millwood Passion Pit after work but refuses due to his shift not ending until late, she then tells him she might come to the diner later for a shake.

Jo is at the library with her lunch along side Ms. Jenkins and asks if she has another copy of the "To Kill A Mockingbird" book, unfortunately an unknown quantity had already checked out the last copy. Then in Home Economics class, Ms. Gardener is teaching the first lesson and wonders if a student is missing. Meanwhile, Jo is in Autoshop class and is seen by Mr. Richards talking in the middle of a lesson, he asks who she is and she responds by saying her name is "Joseph".

Cathy, asked by Ms. Gardener, enlightens the rest of the class about the Phoenix Fest, saying that it is like homecoming but a bit different and mentions that there will be plenty of heavy lifting and that they will need someone to chop wood and build the stage, so Ms. Gardener asks Cathy to find a volunteer from the Autoshop class. When she arrives, she requests Mr. Richards offer her a volunteer from his class to help with Phoenix Buzz, Mr. Richards accepts her request and gladly chooses Jo to volunteer with the fest. She then asks Jo if she would be interested in helping the Phoenix committee, and Jo refuses and that she doesn't need to plan something she won't attend.

At the Diner, Thomas fires one of his employees for forgetting to check the freezer and ruining 40 pounds of beef, then his brother in law Bobby shows up. Meanwhile, as Lawrence, Alice and Cathy are driving home from school, they see Jo walking on the sidewalk. Cathy asks to pull over, she get out of the car and approaches Jo but is avoided when Jo tries to walk away. She asks her if she though about the Phoenix fest committee, Jo says she hasn't and that her Uncle Bob is coning to town. She arrives home with Jo and offers to give her a grand tour of her house as Jo agrees.

At the park, Ray asks two older boys if he can play ball with them, they say no because he doesn't have a signed ball. Ray says that he does and shows his signed "Willie Mays" to them, So they decide to keep it and run away, and Ray chases them.

Meanwhile at the Fitzroy's house, Cathy is thinking of themes for the Phoenix fest. Jo asks her why she's friends with Alice, Cathy responds and says that she is one of her oldest friends and that she's loyal, and she bets that her and Jo would get along, but she disagrees. Jo says that she should check if her uncle is at the diner and Cathy suggests she goes with her to surprise Alice and Lawrence.

Ray is trying to get his ball back from the two bullies, one of them swings the ball with a baseball bat over a person yard.

Jo and Cathy arrive at the diner, her uncle Bobby approaches them who is very happy to see her. Junior claims that he got him a souvenir from San Francisco, and gives Jo a gift containing a new "To Kill A Mockingbird" book. Then Cathy goes outside to find Lawrence and Alice and sees them making out by an umbrella, Lawrence and Alice try to explain but Cathy wouldn't give them the chance. Jo comes out and pours a milkshake all over Alice and punches Lawrence, then her and Cathy leave.

Ray climes the fence to retrieve his stolen ball from the persons lawn, when he tries to grab it, a mysterious man stops him and Ray yells out loud.
