Heather Masterson is a mysterious character on Crown Lake. Nobody knows the truth about her. She could be a real person, a tradition at Crown Lake started by a student or a teacher, or a fake name used to cover a person's identity.

Heather gave away several hints about her life in her notebook, such as her parents getting divorced. Weather this really happened to Heather’s parents or simply part of the scheme is unknown.

When Nellie Chambers transferred to Crown Lake Academy in 1994, she found Heather’s notebook in her closet. The notebook was said to belong to Heather, however it was meant for the next girl in the hopes that the next girl who not make the mistakes she did.

However in season 2, it was confirmed that Heather is a real person, and not simply a rite of passage. Even after Nellie went through the Heather challenge, she was still receiving threatening Heather notes and Chloe wasn't behind it this time. First Nellie and Lucy together planned to take down Tiffany, who they first believe is Heather, since she was the most popular girl at Crown Lake. They believed she was behind the sending of the notes. However, Nellie later received a note that Tiffany wasn't Heather. Later, the notes asked Nellie to become the head of the popular girls at school after Tiffany's brother was exposed.

The new guidance counselor, Ms. Rose said she wanted to give Nellie detention at the Crypt for throwing a party during the ecology fair, however that was not true. She gave a harsh detention to take revenge on Nellie because of her mother's actions. After detention, Ms. Rose knew that the Roaches pay Nellie's tuition, and asked her if others know about that. Ms. Rose had written it down in her papers. Later, a question about who pays Nellie's tuition appeared on the Tattle Wall. After that, Nellie was sure that Ms Rose is Heather. Nellie said that if Ms. Rose has dirt her, she has dirt on everyone else. Nellie sneaks into Ms. Rose's office and found a folder where Ms. Rose noted down secrets of everyone at Crown Lake. Lucy made several copies of those papers, and then Nellie stuck them all around the school hallways. On seeing this, Headmistress Merriweather fired Ms. Rose. After this a message showed up on the Tattle Wall: Wrong Again Nellie. It is not known if Ms. Rose is actually Heather and the message on the Wall was false.

In the season finale, Lucy broke the news to Nellie. It turns out that Heather offered to help Lucy after she was kicked out of her old school. She wanted Lucy to do her some favors in return, by exposing Tiffany's family problems and writing Nellie threatening notes which which would get her into trouble. She first convinced Nellie that Tiffany is Heather, and later exposed her brother on the tattle wall. She was double crossing Nellie all along. Lucy claims that those were orders from Heather, which she couldn't help but do.

At the end of season 2, we see that Lucy gets an email from Heather saying: "Play by the rules, L, or you're next". This indicates that Lucy was the next victim.

In season 3, it takes place in 2022, not the 1990s. However, there was an old journal that apparently belonged to Nellie that was found by Molly King. According to the journal, newspapers and Headmistress Baker there was a fire at Crown Lake Academy in 1996. Apparently, the fire was started by Nellie, which burned down half the school and trapped Lucy. Lucy was unable to escape and was burned to death by the flames before she could be saved. When Nellie was confronted, all she kept saying was that “Heather did it.” Nellie was expelled from the school and went home in disgrace.

Molly and her new friends Ari, Lisa and Morgan found Heather’s secret passages and ways of living in the school without being seen. When Ari and Lisa went searching for Heather when they tracked Molly’s phone in a secret room, they didn’t find anything, but got locked inside the room by someone in a cloak, while the cloaked person laughed maniacally. This person was presumably Heather. Heather started a fire and nearly burned down part of the school with Ari and Lisa in it, but they were saved by Molly and Danny just in time. The caretaker, Danny’s father, managed to stop the fire and turn back on the lights. Morgan found Molly’s phone moving and went to where the phone was. She thought she would catch Heather, but only found Molly’s phone that had a rude note stuck to it, from Heather gloating about her quick escape.
